(Joshua 24:15) “And if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
The children of Israel often “waffled” back and forth between where they had been and where they should be, spiritually and physically speaking. Often, under Moses the people would have some hard times and long for the “good old days” back in Egypt where they had full bellies. They would forget that they weren’t free to worship God as they wanted. Even under Joshua a few, it seems, looked back with longing. I believe many if not all knew that it was wrong to allow themselves to be pulled away from God while still claiming to be of God and wanting His blessings. Imagine the heartache of Moses and Joshua as their own physical and spiritual brethren would choose the ways of the world over them and God!
That happens with God’s people today in many ways. From materialism to false teachers, some Christians will choose the wrong instead of the right while appearing to be faithful brethren. It is either one way or the other! Joshua nailed it when he told his brethren to “choose you this day..” Two things here: 1. You have to make a choice, God or man. 2. It is urgent; do it today! Right now! Remember Ananias when he asked Paul, “Why tarriest thou?” He was telling Paul, do the right thing right now.
My prayer for all is that we always do what is right and not tarry. It’s never too early to be right with God, but we can wait until there is no time left. –Chris
