(Matthew 19:2-9) And great multitudes followed Him, and He healed them there. The Pharisees also came to Him, testing Him, and saying to Him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?” And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ “and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? “So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.” They said to Him, “Why then did Moses command to give a certificate of divorce, and to put her away?” He said to them, “Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. “And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery.”
Often this scripture is pointed to concerning the Lord’s divorce and remarriage law. Divorce is not allowed by the Lord except for sexual immorality (infidelity[ sex, whether with another male, female, or beast]). But, this scripture can be used to show who may have a marriage when those promoting gay marriage voice their opinions. I’ve heard the argument that: “Jesus never addressed the subject of gay marriage.” But He did!
Jesus, speaking to the Pharisees, gave by implication, who marriage is for. If God wanted or allowed men and men or women and women to marry, then why doesn’t Jesus mention it? He defines marriage as male and female, over and over (underlined above). God forbid it in the Old Testament. Jesus defines marriage as being between a man and woman. Why would He have to say specifically that men can’t marry men or women can’t marry women? Because it is already a settled law and principle with God. It is described in the Bible as an abomination. Leviticus 18:22 ‘You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination.’ It was already established as wrong as: murder, lying, idolatry, etc. Some things are timeless with God and this is one of those. No matter how many folks might vote or opine in favor of gay marriage, God and the Lord don’t allow for it. As I wrote last week, “Choose you this day…..” Either we will serve the true God or man. There really isn’t much more to say about it. There are many more passages in the Bible, and none of them allow for homosexuality, but there are many that explicitly condemn it and others that implicitly remove it as a possibility in God’s eyes. Who do you stand with, God or man?
